About data storage conversions

Decimal units (kB, MB, GB) use powers of 1,000; binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) use powers of 1,024. That is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GiB.

Data storage units explained

UnitSystemDefinition and notes
Bit (bit)otherBase unit
Byte (B)other1 B = 8 bit (exact)
Kilobyte (kB)SI (metric)1 kB = 8,000 bit (exact)The decimal kilobyte: exactly 1,000 bytes.
Megabyte (MB)SI (metric)1 MB = 8,000,000 bit (exact)The decimal megabyte: exactly 1,000,000 bytes.
Gigabyte (GB)SI (metric)1 GB = 8,000,000,000 bit (exact)The decimal gigabyte: exactly 1,000,000,000 bytes. Drive makers use this, while Windows shows binary GiB labelled "GB".

Frequently asked questions

Which data storage units can I convert?

bits (bit), bytes (B), kilobytes (kB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), terabytes (TB), petabytes (PB), kibibytes (KiB), mebibytes (MiB), gibibytes (GiB), tebibytes (TiB), kilobits (kbit), megabits (Mbit), gigabits (Gbit).

How accurate are the results?

Every unit is stored with its exact defining factor (NIST SP 811, NIST Handbook 44 or the BIPM SI Brochure). Calculations use double-precision arithmetic and are rounded only for display, to 5 significant figures by default (trailing zeros dropped, so 1 km shows as 1000 m). You can choose Auto (up to 10 digits), fixed decimals or more significant figures, or switch to scientific or engineering notation.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB (megabyte) is decimal: 1 000 000 bytes. MiB (mebibyte) is binary: 1 048 576 bytes. Drive makers use decimal units while many operating systems report binary ones, which is why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GiB.
