About weight conversions
Convert mass ("weight" in everyday speech) between metric and imperial units. The everyday (avoirdupois) pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg.
US customary and British imperial units with the same name differ in size. Each is labelled US or UK in the unit list.
Common weight conversions
Weight units explained
| Unit | System | Definition and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Kilogram (kg) | SI (metric) | Base unitThe SI base unit of mass. Since 2019 it has been defined using a constant of nature (the Planck constant) instead of a metal reference weight. |
| Gram (g) | SI (metric) | 1 g = 0.001 kg (exact)Defined as exactly 1/1,000 of a kilogram. |
| Milligram (mg) | SI (metric) | 1 mg = 0.000001 kg (exact) |
| Microgram (µg) | SI (metric) | 1 µg = 1 × 10⁻⁹ kg (exact) |
| Tonne (metric ton) (t) | metric (non-SI) | 1 t = 1,000 kg (exact)Defined as exactly 1,000 kg. |
| Pound (lb) | US & imperial (identical) | 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg (exact)The everyday (avoirdupois) pound, defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg since 1959. |
| Ounce (oz) | US & imperial (identical) | 1 oz = 0.028349523125 kg (exact)The everyday (avoirdupois) ounce: one sixteenth of a pound, or exactly 28.349523125 g. Not the same as a fluid ounce, which measures volume. |
| Stone (st) | British imperial | 1 st = 6.35029318 kg (exact)Exactly 14 pounds (6.35029318 kg). Common for body weight in the UK and Ireland. |
| US short ton (ton (US)) | US customary | 1 ton (US) = 907.18474 kg (exact)The US "short" ton: exactly 2,000 lb, or 907.18474 kg. |
| UK long ton (ton (UK)) | British imperial | 1 ton (UK) = 1,016.0469088 kg (exact)The UK "long" ton: exactly 2,240 lb, or 1,016.0469088 kg. |
| Troy ounce (oz t) | other | 1 oz t = 0.0311034768 kg (exact)The troy ounce used for gold, silver and other precious metals: exactly 31.1034768 g. |
| Grain (gr) | US & imperial (identical) | 1 gr = 0.00006479891 kg (exact)A tiny traditional unit, one 7,000th of a pound: exactly 64.79891 mg. Still used for bullets and arrows. |
| Carat (metric) (ct) | metric (non-SI) | 1 ct = 0.0002 kg (exact)Defined as exactly 200 mg. Used for gemstones. |
| Slug (slug) | US & imperial (identical) | 1 slug ≈ 14.593903 kgThe imperial unit of mass used in engineering: the mass that 1 pound-force speeds up by 1 ft/s every second. About 14.5939 kg. |

Frequently asked questions
Which weight units can I convert?
kilograms (kg), grams (g), milligrams (mg), micrograms (µg), tonnes (t), pounds (lb), ounces (oz), stone (st), US short tons (ton (US)), UK long tons (ton (UK)), troy ounces (oz t), grains (gr), carats (ct).
How accurate are the results?
Every unit is stored with its exact defining factor (NIST SP 811, NIST Handbook 44 or the BIPM SI Brochure). Calculations use double-precision arithmetic and are rounded only for display, to 5 significant figures by default (trailing zeros dropped, so 1 km shows as 1000 m). You can choose Auto (up to 10 digits), fixed decimals or more significant figures, or switch to scientific or engineering notation.
Why do US and UK (imperial) units give different answers?
Several units share a name but not a size. A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L while an imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 L; a US fluid ounce is about 29.57 mL and a UK fluid ounce about 28.41 mL. Units are labelled US or UK throughout so you can pick the right one.
